A Pickering retiree matched all seven numbers on a LOTTO MAX ticket she bought last month and “never expected to win” to collect a cool $1 million.

Katie Chan, 73, said she occasionally plays LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49 but her win in the May 19 draw came as a “complete surprise,” she shared while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up her windfall.

It was a regular day when Chan checked her ticket at the supermarket and learned she’d won big. “In that moment, I felt calm,” she recalled. “The cashier and customers congratulated me.”

Chan, who plans on sharing her winnings with her family, then told her brother about her win. “He was shocked!” she said. “I’m so happy.”

ENCORE offers 22 ways to win and can be played in conjunction with most lottery games for an extra $1. There is an ENCORE draw every day.

The winning ticket was purchased at Lucky 8 Lottery on Steeles Avenue in Markham.
