Police are still looking for clues to the eleventh murder of 2024 in Durham Region two days after a man was shot dead inside a south Oshawa apartment building Tuesday afternoon.
Durham Regional Police were called to 1040 Cedar Street shortly after 2 p.m. on January 31 after reports of an armed person in the building. Officers arrived to find 29-year-old Dennis Binda suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Duty Inspector Craig McCabe confirmed the shooting did occur inside the building but said he was “unable” to provide any information on suspects or any descriptions.
“This is supposed to be a joyous time of the year and we’re here, unfortunately, investigating the 11th (homicide) of the year.”
The eleven murders in 2024 aligns with the five-year average in the region and is four less than the record 15 homicides from 2022.
Police are continuing to canvass the area and are asking for anyone with information or video footage, including dashcam and home surveillance, to contact police.
Anyone with new information about this investigation is asked to contact Det. Mackinnon of the Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 x 5411.
Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and tipsters may be eligible for a $2,000 cash reward.
