Pop-up rolling skating vibes are coming to the old Sears site in Oshawa next month, with bookings open Wednesday.

SUSO Skate Co. (short for summer solstice) was born during lockdown as a way to transform underused or vacant spaces into community places where people are active and having fun.

Today SUSO has opened 10+ pop-up locations – including venues at The Bentway and the Shops of Don Mills in Toronto and Pier Eight in Hamilton – as well as a mobile van that brings the skate party to you, from community events and birthday parties to school skate days and corporate events.

“We pop-up and transform unique, underused spaces with the goal of creating good vibes and memorable moments for the communities who skate with us,” the company said in a news release. “Less screen time for kids and adults alike is surely a good thing, right?”

The initiative works by moving into vacant retail spaces left behind by big-box stores and transforming them into roller skating wonderlands with a sound system, disco ball and lights, complete with skate and safety gear rentals. They also offer roller skating lessons for adults and kids.

Safety gear for kids under 16 is free.

Hours of Operation at the Oshawa Centre location will be Wednesday and Thursday (All Ages 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Adults 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.); Friday (Adults 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.); Saturday (All Ages 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Adults 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.); and Sunday (All Ages 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.).

The pop-ups start rolling August 16.
