Seven years after Firehouse Subs opened its first Canadian location in Oshawa the fast-growing chain has opened a second location in the motor city, with a restaurant opening December 20 at the 5 Points Mall in the city’s north end.
Started by a family of firefighters in Jacksonville, Florida in 1994, the sub chain expanded to Canada in 2015 with a location at Ritson Road and Adelaide. The company, which was purchased by Burger King parent Restaurant Brands International in 2021 for $1 billion, now has more than 1,200 locations worldwide and 63 in Canada, including sub shops in Courtice, Bowmanville, Whitby and Ajax.
Growing up in an entrepreneurial family with a history of involvement in fire and police service, Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen tried other ventures from rock n roll and real estate to Christmas tree farming before tapping into their roots to open Firehouse Subs 30 years ago.
Firehouse Subs is known for their hot subs, such as the signature Hook ‘n Ladder (smoked turkey, honey ham, Monterrey jack cheese, veggies, mayo and deli mustard), the classic Pepperoni Pizza Meatball (pepperoni, meatballs, marinara sauce and melted cheese) and the popular Italian (salami, pepperoni and Italian dressing) as well as salads, a line of sauces, cookies and chips.
The new location is open seven days a week from 10-10. Catering is available.
