Production wrapped up earlier this week at Parkwood Estate in Oshawa on The Madness, a new Netflix limited series starring Emmy Award winner Colman Domingo.

The show, billed as “a fresh take on the conspiracy thriller” by Netflix executive Peter Friedlander, is about a man who must “fight for his innocence and his life” after he stumbles upon a murder deep in the Pocono woods.

Filming for the eight-episode series took place in various locations in the GTA, including Milton in the spring. Production at Parkwood was over a two-week period.

Durham plays a significant role in Ontario’s multi-billion dollar film, television and digital media industry, thanks to its mix of urban, industrial and rural locations and unique places that can be used for period productions, like Parkwood Estate in Oshawa or Docville in Newcastle.

Momentum has been building for film production at Parkwood and across the Region as we claw our way out of the pandemic. Demand for studio space is also high in Durham and the area boasts key filming and production locations, such as TriBro Studios and the William F. White backlot, the largest of its kind in Canada.

Some of those movies and television productions shot in Durham in recent years include American Gods, It, Hannibal, Orphan Black, Schitt’s Creek, Umbrella Academy, The Boys and The Handmaid’s Tale, to name a few.

The Madness is directed and executive produced by Clement Virgo, whose credits include Netflix’s 2022 hit Dahmer, the HBO classic The Wire, as well as BillionsEmpire, and many more. THe series is expected to air in early 2024.

The pool at Parkwood, which both Klaus (Robert Sheehan) in the Umbrella Academy (above) and Adam Sandler in Billy Madison enjoyed, is a popular spot for filmakers.
