Legion members were among the invitees to the unveiling of the newly renovated Veterans Square in Bowmanville Tuesday, a “cherished and significant” public space that honours the bravery and sacrifice of the community and is the focal point of the Remembrance Day Service.

The new Veterans’ Square features additional flag poles and raised gardens, accessible seating, paved pathways, a service animal relief area and several mobility device charging stations. It also has tactile walking surface indicators, which are detectable underfoot when walking or using a cane.

The renovations provide more opportunities for residents to connect with the community and honour those who served in Canada’s military in times of both war and peace, noted Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

“As a community and nation, we are profoundly indebted to those who have valiantly served and defended the principles of democracy, inclusivity, and respect for individual rights. I am proud to welcome you all to the newly renovated Veterans’ Square, where our community can gather in peace and safety, thanks to the service and sacrifice of those brave individuals,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178, who was consulted on the design, led a commemorative ceremony to mark the reopening of the space.

“Veterans’ Square is an important space that honours those who sacrificed for our country and maintains the spirit of remembrance in Bowmanville,” said Alan Haward, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 President. “We are pleased to help mark the reopening today and to have played a part in creating this space for our community.”

Veterans’ Square is located at the Municipal Administrative Centre, 40 Temperance Street, Bowmanville. Members of the community are invited to check out the new public space during Applefest on Saturday, October 19 or by attending the Bowmanville Remembrance Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11.
