Lakeridge Health is welcoming residents from Clarington and the rest of Durham Region next month for a sneak peek of the plans for Bowmanville Hospital’s much-anticipated hospital redevelopment project.

The Bowmanville Hospital Redevelopment Community Visioning Sessions will let the community hear the latest plans and upcoming milestones, see the design concepts and share their insight on the estimated $736 million project at in-person (October 22) and virtual (October 30) sessions.

The official tender to find a team to lead the project, which will nearly double the size of the hospital, was issued early last month. The Request for Proposal process, which should be complete by early 2025, will help identify project teams that have the necessary design expertise, along with the construction and financial capacity to undertake a project of this magnitude.

“We’re so excited to engage our community and share more information about the largest project in Bowmanville Hospital’s history,” said Lakeridge Health CEO Cynthia Davis. “We’re incredibly grateful for a very supportive community and look forward to hearing your ideas. Your feedback will help us create a space that best meets the needs of our growing population and will elevate patient care in a state-of-the-art facility for generations to come.”

With the region’s population expected to double by 2041, the expansion of services at the Bowmanville Hospital is urgently needed. The expansion will include new ambulatory care clinics, a Haemodialysis Centre, modern, patient-centred facilities including private and bariatric rooms, a new emergency department and a rooftop helipad to enable rapid access to emergency services and Level 3 Critical Care capacity, the highest level of care provided in hospitals for critically ill or injured patients.

The plans also include a new parking garage for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, as well as additional green space to enhance the well-being of everyone in the community.

The community’s share of the campaign is $110 million and fundraising is well underway, with $2,697,321 raised from donors and another $1 million-plus from investment income for the We Care We Can campaign in the fiscal year ending in April, including a $1 million donation from the Vanhaverbake family and a $250,000 pledge from Delpark Homes.

The campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation’s history, was launched in 2019.

“This important project enables Lakeridge Health to continue to create a strong, integrated system of care and achieve its vision of One System. Best Health,” said Davis.
