A man is in life-threatening condition after he crashed his ATV in Orono.

The man, 29, was riding near Station Street in the rural community in east Clarington. Around 4:30 p.m., he lost control of his ATV, crashed and was thrown off.

He suffered severe, life-threatening injuries in the crash. Durham Paramedics rushed him to local hospital for treatment, but he had to be flown to a Toronto trauma centre via Orange air ambulance. Durham Region does not have a trauma centre of its own.

The ATV rider remains in Toronto hospital in life-threatening condition.

The Durham Police Collision Investigation Unit closed the area down for a few hours to collect evidence. The roadway has since reopened.
