A rifle discovered during a traffic stop has led to several charges against two men, including one from Whitby.

The OPP report officers on patrol spotted a car on June 7 that appeared to be swerving in its lane. They pull the car over and allegedly saw drug paraphrenalia within the driver’s reach. The OPP release does not specify the nature of this paraphrenalia.

As they continued to speak with the pair, the OPP said, the officers noticed a rifle magazine in the back seat. They then searched the car and found the matching rifle. After discussing with the pair, the officer learned both were prohibited from having a weapon.

Jesse Garlow, 39 of Douro-Dummer, and Jonathan Guthrie, 37 of Whitby, are both charged with;

  • Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Transport firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner
  • Careless storage of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited device or ammunition
  • Possession of Break in Instruments
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Both were held until a bail hearing.
