Fireworks

With Canada Day just around the corner the City of Oshawa is offering its annual tips on the safe use of pyrotechnics and of being a considerate neighbour.

Fireworks regulations are intended to be considerate of the entire community and those wanting to turn their backyard into a colourful light and sound display are encouraged to communicate their plans with neighbours ahead of time; be aware of pets (they often become frightened by the sound); enjoy the fireworks within a reasonable time; and safely clean up and dispose of the fireworks fall-out.

Safety Reminders

  • You must be at least 18 to possess or discharge fireworks.
  • Only responsible adults aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks.
  • Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging.
  • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by
  • Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass.
  • Keep onlookers a safe distance and upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged.
  • Light one firework at a time and only when located on the ground.
  • Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For duds, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water before disposing of them in a metal container.
  • Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard.
  • Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, causing blindness and severe burns. The sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout and should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury.
  • If someone is burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and, if necessary, seek medical attention.

To make a non-emergency complaint about unsafe or inappropriate use/discharge for fireworks contact Service Oshawa at (905) 436-3311 and leave a message if it is after business hours.
