Oshawa Power is alerting its customers of “sophisticated” scammers who are portraying themselves as utility employees to demand money from residents.

The scammers are posing as Oshawa Power collection agents and demanding cash from customers under threat of disconnection. The crooks are using the Oshawa Power name and likeness and have copied the existing Oshawa Power recorded phone system and set their call ID to display ‘Oshawa PUC.’

“Oshawa Power has NO association with this phone number: 1-(855) 797-1224,” a statement from OPUC said, and will “never” threaten immediate disconnection, ask customers to meet for payment, contact customers from a 1-800 number or accept cash payments.

Oshawa Power only accepts payment via secure online banking, secure online credit card, and mailed cheque to their main office and their only telephone number is (905) 723-4623.

“If you have been contacted by someone demanding immediate payment, hang up and report the call. If you are unsure whether you have been contacted by Oshawa Power, contact our team to determine the authenticity of the phone call.”

Similar Oshawa Power scams were tried in 2017 and 2019 and again in 2020, this time posing as Hydro One employees.
