Drivers will have to dramatically slow down this fall near schools after the municipal council in Clarington approved new speed limits of 30 km/h in school zones.

Most jurisdictions use 40 km/h as the typical speed limit in school zones but the speed limits in Clarington are 50 km/h, which is the standard for most roads that fall within the municipality’s jurisdiction.

New speed limit signs will be installed over the summer months, to be completed in time for the start of the 2024-25 school year.

“Parents had valid concerns about student safety and speeding in school zones, and Council listened. We’re lowering speed limits at Clarington schools along local roads,” said Mayor Adrian Foster. “We’re using the tools we have available to do our utmost to keep our kids safer and give parents some peace of mind.”

Schools affected include:

  • T. Worden, Courtice North, Dr. Emily Stowe, St. Mother Teresa, Dr. G. J. MacGillivray, Lydia Trull, Good Shepherd, Enniskillen, Hampton Junior, Orono, Newcastle, St. Francis of Assisi, Charles Bowman, St. Elizabeth, Harold Longworth, John M. James, Vincent Massey, Clarington Central, Viola Leger, St. Joseph, Waverley, Dr. Ross Tilley and Holy Family elementary schools;
  • Courtice Secondary, Holy Trinity, Clarington Central, St. Stephen, Clarington Centre for Individual Studies secondary schools; and
  • Blaisdale Montessori, Knox Christian Elementary and Durham Christian High private schools.

While most schools in Clarington are located on roads under municipal jurisdiction there are some schools on regional or provincially owned roads that are not part of the project.
