Shooting targeted cannabis grow-op in Cannington, police conclude

Cannabis facility granted special three-year bylaw extension in Milton

The investigation into shots fired in Cannington on Monday morning has found the shooters targeted a local warehouse.

Durham Regional Police report gunfire rang out around 3 a.m. on Dec. 16 near Peace Street and Davidson Street. This area of the rural community about 60 kilometres north of Oshawa is home to several houses.

Officers found several of the homes had security cameras which captured the sound of gunshots. With this and the help of a K-9 unit, they learned the unidentified shooter targeted a warehouse at the end of Davidson Street. No one was reported injured after the shooting.

The investigation found a cannabis grow-op in the area. The operation supported numerous plants beyond what it was licenced for, police found. In total they seized 29,000 cannabis plants and dried cannabis. They conducted the raid with help from the OPP-led Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team.
