Durham Tourism and Durham Region’s Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade wants you to stick around home this holiday shopping season with the launch of the annual ‘Shop Where You Live’ campaign

The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness that buying local will have a positive impact on Durham’s economy. The campaign encourages residents to shop local across Durham’s eight area municipalities for their holiday gift-giving.

You are invited to take a stroll down Main Street and beyond, meet the neighbours that support the economic backbone of the region’s many communities, and to experience something new or an old favourite. Shoppers can help support the campaign by using the hashtag #ShopInDurham when sharing their local holiday finds on social media.

All eight chambers of commerce and trade boards in Durham are participating in the campaign.

“Durham Region is home to a vibrant, diverse, and growing business community that includes an incredible range of product and service offerings,” said Regional Chair John Henry. “I want to encourage residents to show their support for our business community by shopping where they live this season and beyond.”

In the coming weeks, you can expect to hear ‘Shop Where You Live’ messaging on local media and the promotion will include street teams in a downtown near you with promotional bags and materials. Contests and prizes are also on the ticket, notably next week, which has been proclaimed by the Region as ‘Shop in Durham Week.’

The week will kick-off with a flag raising ceremony November 29.

“When you shop where you live, you’re supporting your neighbours – local entrepreneurs and employees making a positive impact on your community – all the while discovering special gifts to share with your loved ones this holiday season,” said Simon Gill, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, Region of Durham.
