The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a major crash in Pickering in which two Durham Regional Police officers and three suspects were injured.
Police reported a crash and active investigation at Sultana Sq. and Foxwood Tr, a residential subdivision off of Whites Rd., around 10 a.m. on Oct. 17. They later confirmed officers had been called to the area following reports of men trying to steal a car.
When responding officers arrived, the suspects allegedly drove straight into one of their cruisers. More than one officer was hurt in the crash, but they have since been medically assessed and cleared.
One of the suspects, the driver, was not injured and fled on foot from the car. He was arrested a short distance away. Two of the three suspects in the car sustained more serious injuries and have been taken to hospital. One was taken to Toronto while the other went to a local facility.
As in any case civilians are injured when interacting with police, the SIU has been called in to investigate. Both they and the Durham Police Collision Investigation Unit remain on the scene collecting evidence.
A police media officer will attend the scene to provide more details shortly.
