Durham Region Police stopped a teenaged boy speeding at 106 km/h in a 60 zone today, around 8:45 Tuesday morning.

The 16-year-old, with a G-1 licence, was driving a Dodge Journey around Courtice Road and Highway 2 without a qualified driver, police say.

Police charged the teen with stunt driving, and driving unaccompanied. DRPS also charged he owner of the vehicle with permitting the teen to drive the car alone.

The boy’s licence has been suspended for 30 days and the Journey impounded for two weeks, the minimum required under Ontario’s new Moving Ontarians More Safely act.

This act came into effect in July, and makes stunt driving charges automatic if a driver exceeds 40 km/h over the speed limit in an 80 km/h or less zone.
