A “small percentage” of software and services employees at General Motors’ Canada’s Canadian Technical Centres in Oshawa and Markham are being let go, part of a layoff of more than 1,0000 software engineers and service staff around the globe.

Most of the layoffs happened at GM’s tech campus outside Detroit in Warren, Michigan, with 600 employees getting the news Monday.

The layoffs come less than six months after leadership changes overseeing the overall company and follow a review to streamline the software and services division.

The software and services division covers OnStar, infotainment, subscriptions and other areas, with the cuts coming as GM and other automakers worry about a downturn in the industry as the companies spend billions on an all-electric future.

GM Canada has not revealed how job losses are in Canada but the company would still employ more than 1,200 engineers at the two technical centres.

The Oshawa technical centre is located on Wentworth Avenue, across the street from the Autoplex assembly plant.

About 5,000 of GM’s salaried workers took buyouts in the spring of 2023 as the company worked to hit a US $2 billion cost-cutting target.
