While most school-age kids are soaking up the sun’s final rays during summer holiday’s last three weeks, students at two Whitby schools are already back in the classroom.

The Durham District School Board’s modified schedule kicked in this week and students at Winchester and CE Broughton elementary schools ‘enjoyed’ their first day of school on Tuesday.

The modified schedule is not new for the students, with Winchester and Broughton employing the special schedule for nearly 30 years. In lieu of those lost few weeks of summer the students get additional breaks in October, March and May.

Several high schools in the region, including Brock (Cannington), Henry Street (Whitby) and Maxwell Heights (Oshawa) will also start earlier than the traditional post-Labour Day first day, but they get another two weeks to enjoy summer (or wrap up summer jobs) before they start classes.
