Sub-machine gun found during traffic stop; Pickering man charged

A loaded sub-machine gun was discovered during a traffic stop on a suspected impaired driver early this morning north of Port Perry.

Durham Police initiated the stop near Simcoe Street and Whitfield Road in Scugog Township just before 3 a.m. Monday while on patrol. Police say the 32-year-old driver was exhibiting signs of impairment and was taken into custody without incident.

The loaded and modified Uzi sub machine gun with a high-capacity magazine was found during the subsequent search of the vehicle.

Brock Tate of Pickering is charged with numerous offences including operation while impaired, obstruct peace officer, driving while under suspension, and five gun-related offences.

He was held for a bail hearing.
