New COVID-19 cases in Durham Region nearly doubled Tuesday with 102 cases reported, the highest number in the past week.

The surge was fuelled by new cases in Whitby (28), Oshawa (22) and Ajax (20), bringing the active case count to 375. The good news is there were no deaths to report and outbreaks in long-term care and retirement homes is down to four with just four people isolating.

Absenteeism rates for the week of March 13-19 have been released and the numbers don’t skew far from non-pandemic rates. For child care settings it was 4.5 per cent, for elementary schools it was 3.6 per cent and secondary schools it was 2.6 per cent.

There are 18 people in local hospitals with the virus and two in ICU.
