A 20 year-old man  is in custody in connection to a stabbing Tuesday morning in north Oshawa that has left a grandfather in critical condition.

Durham Regional Police announced the stabbing shortly after 11 a.m. They reported the victim had been found with multiple stab wounds near Niagara Dr. and Dalhousie Cr., a subdivision off Simcoe St just south of Durham College and Ontario Tech University.

Police shared they had a suspect in custody at 1 p.m. Investigators say the victim was pushing his granddaughter in a stroller when he was attacked. Investigators believe the attack was random and said the child was not injured.

However, investigators remain on scene and are advising residents to steer clear of the area.

Duty Insp. Chris Ludlow said the 20 year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterwards at a nearby home, with the help of multiple witnesses and surveillance video.

He has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

Ludlow says the suspect is known to police and officers are investigating the motive for the attack.

Investigators say they have not spoken to the victim.
