Update: Suspicious package declared ‘safe’ by bomb squad; officers still on scene in Whitby

Update 4:45 p.m.: Durham Regional Police report the package has been rendered safe by their Explosive Disposal Unit. The investigation is still underway. However, all roads in the area have been reopened, except for Scotia Cr.

“Anyone in the area of the call are safe to resume commuting through the area,” police said.

Explosive Disposal Unit officers from Durham Police are on the scene of a suspicious package near Thickson Road and Wentworth Street in Whitby this afternoon.

The package was discovered shortly after 1 p.m.

Police are evacuating the busy commercial area while the explosive unit specialists do their jobs.

DRPS is asking people to avoid the area until it is deemed safe. More information to follow.
