No smoke detectors found in over 2,000 homes checked in Brampton fire safety blitz

Fire Services province-wide are hosting the inaugural Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Thursday, September 28 to raise awareness about the importance of smoke alarms and Oshawa Fire Services is encouraging residents and property owners to test their detectors this month with Oshawa Generals tickets as an incentive.

Working smoke alarms should be installed on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home. Last year there were more fire fatalities in Ontario than in the last 20 years so you could be saved by the beep.

This month, post a photo of you or family members testing your smoke alarm and share with @OshawaFire on Twitter or @CityofOshawa on Instagram using the hashtag #SavedByTheBeep until September 28 for your chance to win a set of four tickets to an Oshawa Generals home game.

Learn more about Saved by the Beep and how to win tickets to the game at oshawa.ca/SmokeAlarms.

Smoke alarm tips:

  • Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home.
  • For added protection, install a smoke alarm in every bedroom according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Larger homes may require additional smoke alarms.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change the batteries every year.

Smoke alarms wear out over time. Replace your smoke alarms according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
