Thieves try to steal an ATM machine in Warrenville, Illinois in 2023

In something straight out of a movie scene, two women are in custody after an ATM machine was yanked from its base in north Oshawa and dragged through a nearby cornfield, with police in pursuit.

Durham Police officers responded to a call about two “suspicious” vehicles near Simcoe Street and Winchester at the top end of the city’s University District at 1 a.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they found a van and a pick-up truck in the parking lot. The truck then fled, dragging the ATM machine behind it, with police following the trail of sparks into the cornfield.

The driver of the truck fled on foot and was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

A woman in the van, which had remained at the crime scene and had been reported stolen, was also arrested.

Sabrina Warren, 30, of Clarington is facing five charges, including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

She was held for a bail hearing.

Elisabeth McLaughlin, 33, of Whitby, is looking at six charges, with disguise with intent added to the list of offences.

McLaughlin was released on a promise to appear.
