If you’re looking to make last-minute plans this weekend, there are plenty of events happening in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. From cultural celebrations and food festivals to historical tours and live music, these cities offer a wide range of activities. Here is what’s going on from Sept. 27 to Sept. 29:


September 27

Pickering:

PA Days at Earthbound Kids

Earthbound Kids offers year-round PA Day and School Break Day Camp programs for children aged 4 to 12. Their popular Saddle Club program, designed for kids 6 to 12, provides a chance to learn to ride and care for horses, while more experienced riders can improve their skills. The Treetop PA Day program, for kids 4 to 12, offers a well-rounded experience with activities like horseback riding, sports, BMX biking, arts and crafts and more. Both camp programs feature a new theme each day, ensuring a fresh and exciting experience for everyone. Cost ranges from $95 – $110 per child.

Ajax:

Ajax Spirit Walk

Take a step back in time and explore Ajax’s rich history through a guided walking tour of Pickering Village. Along the way, participants will hear stories from local “spirits” that bring the town’s history to life. The tour offers five different timeslots to choose from: 7 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 7:45 p.m., and 8 p.m. Guests are to be prepared for approximately 60 minutes of travel by foot or mobility device as they journey through the historic village.

Whitby:

Meghan Trainor Concert

Meghan Trainor will be performing at Blossom Music Center, known for hits like All About That Bass, Dear Future Husband, and Like I’m Gonna Lose You. Trainor’s music blends pop and R&B influences, delivering catchy tunes and empowering messages of self-confidence and body positivity.

Pickering:

Storytime 

This free family-friendly event, happening at the Pickering Public Library, celebrates Islamic History Month by exploring Muslims’ contributions to the arts and sciences. In partnership with the library, the event will feature book readings, colouring activities and crafts.

Walk Right Back Concert

Walk Right Back, a popular production from the UK returns to the stage after a sold-out tour. This concert-based musical tells the story of The Everly Brothers, the iconic duo behind hits like “Bye Bye Love,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” and “Cathy’s Clown.” The show follows their rise to fame, decade-long feud and reunion with music that influenced artists like The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. This production, featuring songs from their friends Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, offers a captivating look into the lives and music of the Everly Brothers. Tickets range from $55 to $75.

Plant Walk for Young (at heart) Explorers

This free event offers a guided walk around the Heritage Hamlet of Whitevale and the Seaton Trail. Participants will learn about native and invasive species, as well as local wildlife while exploring the area’s natural beauty.

Art Show and Print Demo – Rashmi Baird

This free event features print artist Rashmi Baird, who will showcase her work and provide a live demonstration of printmaking and etching techniques.

Ajax:

2024 Koi Harvest

The annual Koi Harvest returns, offering a look at the final “pull” from the mud pond, where domestic koi are sorted and graded for the upcoming season. Attendees can observe the collection process as young koi are transported from the nursery mud pond to winter tanks in the Water Garden and Pond department. The event will take place rain or shine and guests are encouraged to dress for the weather.

Bollywood Garba

Whitby Farmers’ Market

This market offers a variety of options for those seeking tasty treats, fresh produce or unique creations. It’s the perfect opportunity to support local vendors and enjoy the community atmosphere.

Oshawa:

Lobster Fest 2024

The Canadian Brewhouse is bringing back Lobster Fest. The event will feature a starter Caesar salad, fresh Atlantic lobster, baked mac and cheese and garlic toast. Attendees also have a chance to win an Alexander Keith’s mini fridge and a $500 Clearwater Seafood voucher. Tickets are $65, which includes taxes and fees. Reservations are required and once tickets are purchased, attendees are advised to call in to secure their seats.

Oktoberfest Dinner & Dance

Club Loreley Inc. is hosting its annual Oktoberfest celebration with a dinner and dance including performances by the Loreley Youth Dancers. Admission for the dance is between $10 and $15, while the dinner and dance combo costs between $30 and $35.

Pickering:

Jazz on the Patio
Kevin Byrne and occasional guests will be playing at Open Studio Art Cafe. His smooth jazz sets the perfect vibe for a relaxing Sunday.

BSP Band live at The Ajax Legion

Happening at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 322, the Backstage Pass Band will perform live. The band, known for its energetic sets, frequently plays classic rock and popular covers, making it a crowd favourite at local venues.

Carnival Day & Family Market

Smiling Faces Equestrian, in collaboration with Air Bounce Adventures, is hosting a Carnival Day and Family Farm Market. The event will feature an inflatable village, games with prizes, a dunk tank, local vendors, pony rides for all ages, a concession stand and BBQ, face painting, carnival snacks and opportunities to meet the farm’s rescue animals.

Oshawa:

Truth & Reconciliation Day

The Oshawa Museum is commemorating Truth and Reconciliation Day (Orange Shirt Day) with special events at Robinson House. Visitors can explore “A Carrying Place,” which delves into the area’s Indigenous history. They can also participate in the Moccasin Identifier Project by painting a moccasin stencil and contribute an orange ribbon to the Orange Ribbon Memorial Wall in Lakeview Park.
