A Toronto man is accused of setting an Oshawa home ablaze last year.

A home near Jim Brewster Circle and Fleetwood Drive, a residential area near the Courtice border, was set on fire on Dec. 3, 2023.

Witnesses saw two men at the home prior to the blaze who both fled in a BMW sedan. An investigation launched which determined the fire was an arson case and the BMW was stolen.

However, the investigation cooled for the better part of a year until a suspect was arrested on Sept. 9.

Taha Ali, 20 of Scarborough, is charged with;

  • two counts of arson causing property damage,
  • possession of incendiary material for arson,
  • two counts of arson with disregard for human life,
  • endanger lives and the safety of the public,
  • possess property obtained by crime over $5,000, and
  • conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

An unidentified second suspect remains at large.

Anyone with information about the fire can call police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1641.
