Two young men from outside the region have learned the hard way it’s best not to run red lights and speed when there is a gun in the car.

Durham Police say they spotted the pair at Harmony Road and Bloor Street in Oshawa Saturday night just before midnight “swerving” in their lane at the on-ramp for Highway 401. But before they could initiate a traffic stop the two men – an 18 year-old from Markham and a 19 year-old Scarborough resident – ran the red light and accelerated at “a high rate of speed” westbound on the highway.

Police were able to make a traffic stop a short time later and discovered the gun and some ‘illicit’ cannabis.

Delmar Fletcher, 18, is facing five charges, including two offences related to the firearm. Jahleed Clarke, 19, is looking at three charges, including the same two gun offences.

They were both held for bail hearings.
