Trent University Oshawa will celebrate half a century In Oshawa Wednesday with an anniversary party at the Durham GTA campus on Thornton Road.

The university’s ninth and newest president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Cathy Bruce, will be in town for the event, which will also include remarks from Trent Durham vice-president Dr. Scott Henderson (Class of ’88), Trent Board of Governors chair Doug Kirk (Class of ’70), assistant professor and Trent Durham alumna Dr. Raheleh Saryadizi (Class of ’11), Durham Region Chair John Henry and Oshawa councillor and deputy mayor Bob Chapman.

Trent has been offering courses in the city for 50 years, initially in classrooms rented from Eastwood Collegiate and later at space at Durham College. The Peterborough-based school steadily expanded the range of courses available before acquiring a former elementary school on Thornton Road and opening its own campus in Oshawa in 2010.

Trent University, which made several gains in the 2025 Maclean’s University Rankings – moving up to #2 in Canada for best overall and #1 in Ontario and #3 in Canada for highest quality – opened a campus in downtown Oshawa last year.

Wednesday’s event at the Building B Atrium, will start at noon, with speeches beginning at 12:30.
