Twenty-four new COVID-19 cases in Durham; nine from Whitby

New COVID-19 cases in Durham jumped to 24 Wednesday, thanks to outbreaks in Whitby and Pickering, which reported nine and six new cases, respectively.

The number of active cases dropped to 138 and there are three people in hospital with one in ICU.

School outbreaks climbed slightly to eight but there are only nine students isolating as most of the cases have now been resolved. All 14 students who contracted the virus at Monseigneur Leo Cleary Catholic School have been resolved and the school might be ready to re-open to in-school learning next Tuesday.

There are just two long-term care homes with residents self-isolating and two factories with declared outbreaks as well.

The percentage of 12-plus Durham residents who are now fully vaccinated is now 80.5.
