UBC wins title, Ridgebacks reach consolation final in USports men’s soccer championships in Oshawa

UBC won its 14th national championship while Ontario Tech reached the consolation final in its first crack at hosting a nationals in any sport as the USports men’s soccer championships wrapped up at Vaso’s Field in Oshawa.

Joven Mann’s header in the second minute of stoppage time was enough to give the UBC Thunderbirds a 1-0 win over the Montréal Carabins in the championship game, the Vancouver soccer powerhouse’s first national crown since 2013.

Ontario Tech, which won its first Ontario title the week before, played the perfect host, dropping a heartbreaker to McGill in a shootout in the opener before booking their ticket to Saturday’s fifth-place game with a 2-1 win over New Brunswick.

The Ridgebacks lost to Atlantic champion St. Francis Xavier in the consolation final 2-1.

UBC opened with a 4-2 win over New Brunswick before trouncing McGill 3-0 to reach Sunday’s final and a chance to hoist the Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy.
