Local charities will be the big winners at the track Thanksgiving Monday for Race Day for the United Way at Ajax Downs.
The jam-packed afternoon will feature Quarter Horse racing, raffles and prizes, a pumpkin giveaway to the first 100 kids, an appearance by the headless horseman and the ‘Turkeys vs. Chickens’ race for laughter and a good cause, with all proceeds going to United Way charities.
Among the raffle prizes for United Way Day are Toronto Maple Leaf hockey tickets, tickets to The Lion King, a barbeque and more.
Punters are encouraged to bring a new or used clothing item to receive a $5 betting voucher and there is also a blanket giveaway while quantities last.
The on-track highlight is the $57,150 Ontario Sired Stakes Derby with a competitive field of 10 horses racing 350 yards as race seven.
The Derby is a bettor’s dream with an evenly matched field of 3-year-old colts and fillies, including Chasing Butterflies, a bay gelding seeking his first stakes win, with stakes winners General Skywalker and Snow Magically Sweet also in the race.
First race post time is 12:55 p.m.
