Two Chilean men are in custody after attempting to rob an ATM in Ajax and then driving a car into a nearby home while fleeing from police.

Durham Police say the two men, who police allege are linked to an organized crime ring, were spotted by bank security trying to break into an ATM with various tools at a Scotiabank location at Westney Road and Kingston Road late Sunday night.

Police were called and found a “suspicious vehicle” at the bank and attempted to block the car, only for the two suspects to escape, initiating a short pursuit by officers.

The vehicle drove through two backyards in a bid by the suspects to flee police and ended up smashing into a residence On Rands Road. The driver was taken into custody without incident and was later taken to Ajax-Pickering Hospital with minor injuries.

No one inside the residence were injured. The home is still being assessed for structural integrity as police say the damage from the collision was “significant.”

Omar Burgos Burgos, 39, is charged with flight from police, break-and-enter and participate in criminal organization. Alejandro Castro Diaz. 28, is charged with break-and-enter and participate in criminal organization.

Both men recently arrived in Canada from Chile.  They were held for a bail hearing.
