UPDATE: Duty Insp. Craig McCabe has provided updates to the public on the nine-vehicle collision in Oshawa, which left one dead and sent eight others to the hospital.
Upon arrival, officers say one person was pronounced dead while multiple individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two vehicles were also on fire.
McCabe confirmed that among the injured were people at a food truck parked northeast of the intersection.
“There were people in the parking lot. I believe they were struck by debris,” McCabe said.
The sequence of events leading to the crash is still under investigation. However, McCabe said that the vehicles involved were heading south on Ritson Road.
Several people are in hospital, with some fighting for their lives, after a multi-vehicle crash this afternoon in Oshawa.
Durham Regional Police responded to a collision involving nine vehicles near the intersection of Ritson Road South and Bloor Street East shortly after 12:30 p.m.
The number of occupants in each vehicle at the time of the accident remains unclear and police have not indicated the exact number of victims who are in critical condition.
The intersection has been closed and officials expect it to remain shut for several hours as investigations into the cause of the crash continue. There is no estimated time for when the roadways will reopen.
Drivers are asked to use alternate routes.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a photo of the crash aftermath, showing a damaged food truck cordoned off with police tape. Officers are seen conversing while several individuals stand nearby; their connection to the incident remains unclear.
