Durham Police have released new details of the suspicious package delivered to a business in the Thickson Road and Wentworth street area of Whitby Wednesday afternoon.

The DRPS Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was pressed into service and police say the bomb unit performed a controlled detonation of the package.

Police say they were called in after an employee at a local business received a “suspicious package.” The area was then sealed off and the EDU arrived on the scene.

Officers continued their on-scene investigation and after destroying the item it was determined the package was not capable of detonating.

Investigating officers believe this to be an isolated incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information pertaining to this investigation is asked to call D/Cst. Fitzgerald of the Central West Criminal Investigation Bureau at 1-888-579-1520. ext. 1877.
