UPDATE: Durham Police say the SIU has invoked its mandate and will take over the investigation. “No further details will be provided,” police said.

A man who walked into a police station in Pickering brandishing a gun has been taken to hospital with unknown injuries after an altercation with two police officers at the front desk.

Durham Regional Police said the man, armed with a firearm, walked into the West Division station on Kingston Road at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. A subsequent “interaction” between the suspect and officers resulted in the man being injured and placed into custody, according to police.

He was transported to hospital, though the extent of his injuries is unknown. Police have not disclosed if the suspect was shot.

The two police officers involved sustained minor injuries.

Police believe the man was armed with a pellet gun, but they’re waiting for tests to confirm if that’s the case.

The suspect’s name has not been released, nor have police said what, if any, charges will be laid.

The West Division station is closed during the ongoing investigation, but officers who work out of the station will still respond to service calls, police said.
