The United States stunned the hosts and rivals Canada, 8-7, in the gold medal game to win the 2023 Super Sixes title at Oshawa’s Civic Fields Sunday.

The win was a reversal of Saturday’s meeting on day two of the competition, which Canada won 14-10. The United States also flipped the script from the World Games in 2022, when Canada narrowly edged the USA on its home soil in Birmingham, Alabama in the gold medal match.

Dempsey Arsenault scored the game-winning goal Sunday with 1:31 to play as the USA women came back from a 6-3 first half deficit.

Canada, pre-game

Haudenosaunee won the bronze medal in the tournament – held for the second year in a row in Oshawa, with Canada winning gold in 2022 – besting lacrosse newcomers Kenya 21-4.

The Kenyan team, however, will go home with heads held high, losing by just five to Canada and by eight to Haudenosaunee in pool play. The team will also go home with a load of lacrosse equipment donated by organizations in Durham Region and in Peterborough.
