Go east if you want to find affordable housing, they used to say.
They’re not saying it any longer.
Durham Region communities dominated the top ten board for housing price increases for the first half of 2021 versus the same period last year, taking seven of the ten spots, including the top two.
Uxbridge led the way with a staggering 46.4 per cent hike in its average selling price in the January-June period, with house prices rising from $933,368 to $1,365,983.
Scugog was second, with its average sale price jumping 43.9 per cent from $685,828 in 2020 to $986,878 this year.
King County in York Region was third in the RE/Maxx/Toronto & Region Real Estate Board study with a 40.2 per cent increase.
Brock Township and Pickering are next at 39.9 per cent, with Clarington and Oshawa right behind at 39.8 per cent.
Caledon (Peel Region) and East Gwillimbury (York Region) slot in at #8 and #9 respectively with 39.2 and 36 per cent year-over-year increases in their housing prices, with Whitby taking the final spot on the list.
Whitby’s average home prices rose from $797,435 in the first half of 2020 to $1,080.979 this year.
Low inventory, high demand and a major spike in people working from home are the chief reasons cited for the price increases.
