A veteran firefighter with more than 30 years experience and roles as Deputy Chief in both Whitby and Kawartha Lakes has been hired as Scugog Township’s newest Fire Chief.

Mike Matthews started his career in September 1991 as a volunteer firefighter for the Whitby Fire Department. He served the community for 31 years, progressing through the ranks to Deputy Chief (serving a brief stint acting Fire Chief in 2022) before leaving for the Deputy Fire Chief position at Kawartha Lakes two years ago.

He also began serving Scugog as a volunteer firefighter, starting in December 2020, and when the position of Fire Chief for Scugog became available, it was “an opportunity that he had been hoping for.”

“As community leaders in fire safety and emergency preparedness, we are committed to protecting the lives and property of our residents,” Matthews said on his appointment. “Our mission goes beyond responding to emergencies; it’s about educating and empowering the community to prevent them in the first place. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient future for everyone.”

The position oversees and directs the operations of Fire Services and emergency management and Matthews said he will be directing his efforts into building a modern and progressive fire service ready to respond to the needs of the community.

“It is truly an honor to lead the dedicated team at Scugog Fire. Every day, I am inspired by their courage, commitment, and passion for serving our community. Together, we stand ready to respond, protect, and make a difference in the lives of those we serve, and I am proud to be part of such an exceptional organization.”
