Police say a young driver’s quick thinking averted a “potentially devastating” crash after a transport truck ran a red light in Uxbridge last week.
The driver was travelling down Elgin Park Dr. shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 8 and intended to turn left onto Toronto St. on the green light.
However, a transport truck came barrelling down Toronto St, running the red light as the driver tried to make their turn, as seen in footage taken from a nearby parking lot.
Police say the driver attempting the turn saw the truck coming and didn’t proceed.
The trucker then slammed on the breaks as soon as it crossed the intersection. Once the truck was out of the way the driver completed the turn and filed a police complaint.
The truck driver, 29, was ultimately charged with failure to stop at a red light and careless driving.
“The driver’s quick thinking prevented a devastating collision and reminds us the importance of being a defensive driver,” Durham Regional Police later said.
