Police say a Whitby man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run that killed one woman and injured two other people–one seriously.
Toronto police say that around 2 a.m. on July 4, officers responded to a crash on the eastbound Gardiner Expressway, east of Dufferin Street. Police allege that two vehicles were travelling east when a black Audi sedan rear-ended a Kia sedan at a “high rate of speed.”
Police say the Kia had five occupants, including a two-year-old child. Three people were uninjured, but a 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead in hospital and another passenger, a 20-year-old woman, sustained “life-altering injuries.” The child sustained minor injuries.
Police allege the Audi driver fled the scene on foot and was seen walking on the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway towards Spadina Avenue.
Vance Kong, 48, was located and arrested in connection with the crash. He’s facing numerous charges, including impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and more.
Investigators are seeking any dash camera footage, surveillance footage, or information from people travelling in the area at the time that may assist the investigation.
