Whitby man charged with impaired after fatal Port Hope collision

A Whitby man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a fatal collision near Port Hope Saturday night
Northumberland OPP responded to a single-car crash in the Wright Road and County Road 10 area at 1:30 a.m. March 19. Northumberland EMS and Hydro One were also called to the scene.
The driver, Mathieu Richard, 31 of Whitby, was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries. The passenger of the vehicle, Daniel Nicholas Thomson, 32 of Campbellcroft, was declared dead on scene.
Wright Road was closed for several hours for investigation by the OPP Traffic Collision Investigation (TCI) team. Detours were set at Tenth Line and Wright Road.
The OPP announced the road was reopened shortly before 4 p.m.

Richard was later charged with impaired operation causing death. He is scheduled to appear in a Cobourg courtroom on April 6.
“Drivers are reminded that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving,” said the OPP.
