OPP are investigating a fatal collision that took place in Scugog Township this afternoon (Feb. 19).

Around noon, police were called for a serious crash involving about eight vehicles on Highway 7/12 near Saintfield Rd.

While officers were still heading to the scene, one of the drivers involved in the collision exited her vehicle and was struck by another approaching vehicle.

The 67 year old woman has been pronounced dead at the scene.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt attributes the incident to the major snowstorm and blowing winds severely impacting roads and visibility, particularly in Scugog where snow was blowing off the fields.

Whitby OPP’s collision reconstruction team and a coroner have attended the scene to assist the investigation.

OPP say numerous similar collisions have taken place across the province and are urging drivers to be cautious during serious winter weather.
