Those looking for an autumn walk along Whitby’s Waterfront will be disappointed, but the wait will be worth the improvements.

The town has announced the trail will close on September 3 for the rest of the year. They are widening the path between Forbes Street and Boundary Road in Intrepid Park. They are also adding a new pedestrian bridge and boardwalk along the path.

The project received $2.6 million in funding from the federal active transportation fund. This $400 million resource was launched in 2021 “to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient and more enjoyable,” according to the federal government. It aims to increase community access to pathways, bike lanes, trails and pedestrian bridges.

The trail will remain closed until May 2025. In the meantime, residents will not be allowed in the construction zone.
