The 72-year-old woman attacked in her home last week has succumbed to her injuries in hospital and the suspect’s charges have been upgraded to murder.

Neighbours on Bermuda Ave. called 911 to report a loud argument shortly before 11:30 p.m. on June 27. When officers reached the home near the Oshawa airport, they found the woman in life-threatening condition and paramedics rushed her to hospital.

The responding officers arrested Sean Carter, 37 of Oshawa, at the home after a struggle. He was charged with aggravated assault and assaulting a police officer. Carter was also injured during the arrest which prompted a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation. The SIU launches an investigation when a civilian is seriously injured in an interaction with police. However, the nature of Carter’s injury has not been disclosed.

The woman, now known as Linda Carter, fought for her life for days but succumbed to her injuries on July 1. In the wake of her death, Sean Carter’s assault charge was upped to first-degree murder.

Carter is the ninth person murdered in Durham Region in 2023 following the deaths of; John Genereux on Jan. 17, Ken Choppee on Jan. 27, married couple Aram Kamel and Rafad Alzubaidy on Feb. 4, Amaar Jawaid on March 5, Katie Kainz on March 14, Michael Nigris on March 30 and Anthony Dixon on June 18.

Sean Carter remains in custody pending a bail hearing. Police confirmed the he and the victim knew each other but did not confirm the nature of their relationship. They said there is no further concern for public safety.
