Spencer McCracken was killed in a crash with a suspected drunk driver in Bowmanville last weekend.

Support for the family of Spencer McCracken, the man killed in Bowmanville after he, his wife and his infant daughter were struck by a suspected drunk driver.

A grey Hyundai sedan struck a grey Hyundai Tucson SUV on Simpson Avenue in Bowmanville shortly after 8:30 p.m. on July 21, Durham Police reported. Both cars were headed southbound on Simpson Avenue when they collided.

The sedan then lost control and barrelled onto the sidewalk where it struck the family; McCracken, his wife Breanna and daughter Lily. All three were rushed to hospital where McCracken was pronounced dead. Breanna and Lily were also seriously hurt.

In the wake of McCracken’s death, Alanna Kelly launched a GoFundMe fundraiser in support of Breanna and Lily. She describes McCracken as “a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend” and “a beacon of light and kindness, always willing to lend a helping hand and share a warm smile.”

“As they navigate this incredibly difficult time, we are coming together to support Breanna and Lily with the financial burdens that come with such an unexpected loss,” Kelly continued.

The GoFundMe has set a goal of raising $100,000 for “funeral expenses and to help Breanna and Lily as they adjust to life without their beloved Spencer.” It is already well on its way, hitting $53,000 in the first day from nearly 600 donations.

“Spencer touched the lives of so many with his generosity and love. Now, it’s our turn to give back to his family in their time of need,” Kelly concluded, “Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference. Thank you for your kindness, support, and prayers during this heartbreaking time.”

According to Facebook, Spencer and Breanna married in 2022. Lily was born just this January.

The GoFundMe is available here.

The suspected impaired driver, Liam James Patrick Kendall, 22 of Clarington, faces nine charges including multiple counts of impaired and dangerous driving as well as drving without insurance.
