Universal City development in Pickering

Housing starts in a province in dire need of housing may be less than hoped for but there was no shortage of major developments in the Region of Durham this year, with some projects looking to transform the communities.

From controversial housing developments on the shores of Lake Scugog to soaring skyscrapers in downtown Oshawa, 2024 was a “wild ride.”

Here are the Top 5 development stories in Durham Region in 2024.

Neglected downtown Oshawa site finally seeing residential future

Dormant for 37 years, ravaged, first by fire and then by neglect, a property on the southern edge of Oshawa’s downtown with a colourful history will soon be home to 500 high rise tenants.

The Medallion project will rise up on the former Fittings factory on Bruce Street.

Port Perry housing development will ‘devastate’ Scugog wetlands – MSIFN

A 600-unit development on the shores of Lake Scugog will threaten the area’s wetlands and the overall health of the lake, declared the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation in an open letter to Scugog Council.

The Township approved the Avenu development in late 2023 and was considering supporting a Ministerial Zoning Order, with the final vote on the downtown Port Perry development expected September 23.
